چکیده
Birds have the impressive ability to gracefully ‘swim’ through the air while executing aerobatic maneuvers that routinely defy modern aeronautical and control engineering, consistently reminding us that the skies are truly their playground. Many of these animals are masters at exploiting post-stall pressure drag to execute maneuvers with unprecedented speed and precision, with nowhere near the sustained propulsive power (scaled) found in modern state-of-the-art aircraft. This amazing ability to manipulate the air is commonly attributed to the intricate morphology of the wings, tail, feathers and overall sensory motor system of the animal. In this thesis we demonstrate, on real hardware, that using only an approximate model of the post-stall aerodynamics in combination with principled and novel tools in optimal control, even a simple fixed-wing foam glider (no propeller) made out of rigid flat plates, with a single actuator at the tail, is capable of executing a highly dynamic bird-like perching maneuver to land on a power-line by exploiting pressure drag on its stalled wings and tail. We present a feedback controller capable of stabilizing the maneuver over a wide range of flight speeds and quantify its robustness to wind-gust disturbances. In order to better characterize the aerodynamics during perching, we performed smoke-visualization in a low-speed freeflight wind-tunnel, where we were able to capture real images of the dominant vortex wake dynamics. We describe the application of these results to the synthesis of higher fidelity aerodynamic models. We also demonstrate our initial perching experiments with flappingwings, using a flapping-wing version of our glider as well as our fully computerized two-meter wingspan robotic bird, Phoenix. Control Law Design for Perching an Agile MAV with Articulated Wings
This paper explores the use of variable wing dihedral and variable wing twist (in conjunction with a conventional horizontal elevator) to control an aircraft performing a perching maneuver. A choice of controller architecture wherein the dihedral is employed in the forward path and the elevator and twist are employed in the feedback path, is considered. The aircraft is modeled as a multivariabl...
متن کاملControl of Quadrotors for Robust Perching and Landing
While the use of micro unmanned vehicles is steadily increasing, there are currently no viable approaches for perching and holding on to landing pads. We describe the design, control, and planning methodologies to enable perching. Our work builds on an off-the-shelf UAV and motion capture system and addresses (a) the design and fabrication of a claw or gripping mechanism for perching; and (b) p...
متن کاملEvaluating the low back biomechanics of three different office workstations: Seated, standing, and perching.
The objective of this study was to evaluate how different workstations may influence physical behavior in office work through motion and how that may affect spinal loads and discomfort. Twenty subjects performed a typing task in three different workstations (seated, standing, and perching) for one hour each. Measures of postural transitions, spinal loads, discomfort, and task performance were a...
متن کاملThe Effects of Shape Reconfiguration on Morphing Aircraft in Perching Maneuvers
This paper focuses on a novel morphing aircraft capability called perching: the ability of an aircraft to make a planted landing using primarily aerodynamic forces in lieu of high thrust. Specifically, the modeling of the perching aircraft’s aerodynamics and the problem of computing and optimizing a perching trajectory using this model are presented. The aerodynamic model discussed herein is de...
متن کاملA Variable Forward-Sweep Wing Design for Improved Perching in Micro Aerial Vehicles
A micro aerial vehicle with a variable forward-sweep wing is proposed with the goal of enhancing performance and controllability during high-angle-of-attack perching maneuvers. Data is presented from a series of wind tunnel experiments to quantify the aerodynamic effects of forward sweep over a range of angles of attack from -25° to +75°. A nonlinear dynamics model is constructed using the wind...
